The challenge
In 2020, DMZ began consulting on entrepreneurship projects in Japan, which led to the incorporation of DMZ Japan in 2025 – a multi-stakeholder initiative to support Japan’s vision for a vibrant, globally competitive startup economy. This collaboration encompasses partnerships with prominent Japanese organizations including Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Waseda University, Chiba University, and Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO).
DMZ Japan connects students, university leaders, and startups through innovative international entrepreneurship programs that bridge the innovation ecosystems of Canada and Japan.
Although Japan has strong research institutions and a rich history of innovation, its startup ecosystem has faced challenges in scaling companies globally and fostering entrepreneurial culture among youth. While academically excellent, Japanese universities often lack startup incubation frameworks and international commercialization pathways.
Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) reports that startups contribute only a small fraction to national GDP, and Japanese student interest in entrepreneurship continues to trail behind OECD averages. There is a growing need to integrate entrepreneurial learning, global mentorship, and commercialization expertise into its academic sector.
Our solution
DMZ Japan strategically applies DMZ's proven innovation approaches to Japan's startup and education ecosystem. Through curated student exchanges, institutional partnerships, and targeted incubation initiatives, we're building capacity where it matters most – talent development, specialized training, and global market access.
In Japan, DMZ has raised over $1.1M in funding to support entrepreneurial programming, served 25 Japanese startups, and formed 5 major partnerships across the region. We are committed to long-term partnerships that foster cross-border innovation, investment, and trade between Canada and Japan.
Our approach
- Cross-Cultural Startup Challenge • In 2025, Japan is hosting a joint innovation challenge at EXPO Osaka for 20 Canadian and Japanese students. The week-long program will focus on developing real-world solutions – including workshops on entrepreneurship education at universities, as well as a student pitch showcase.
- Canadian Immersion Program • In 2025, Chiba University students and staff will join DMZ Basecamp in Toronto for a multi-day immersion program. Participants will receive expert mentorship on launching and scaling startups, while exploring effective strategies to enhance entrepreneurship within Japanese campus environments.
- Impact through Local Incubation • In partnership with Chiba City and JETRO, DMZ co-developed a new incubation program that launched in December 2024. This initiative will equip Chiba-based entrepreneurs with essential tools for international expansion – including comprehensive go-to-market planning, investor pitch refinement, and strategic sales development.
- Collaborative Ecosystem Building • These initiatives are fostering long-term collaboration between Canada and Japan by connecting founders, institutions, and government partners across borders – resulting in strengthened relationships between academic and municipal stakeholders.
